NEWS AND INFORMATION

Alderney Mile Building

29 April to 1st May 2012

This is an opportunity to obtain 60nm qualifying passages for those aspiring to the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore qualification. Four such passages are required as part of the 2500 logged sea miles. Two of these passages are required as skipper and two as night passages. To be valid skippered passages, you need to draw up the passage plan covering navigation, weather, watches etc and act as skipper for part of the voyage. This is a lovely large comfortable yacht for cross channel trips of this nature.
Set sail from the River Hamble on evening of Friday 29 April on our Elan 434 bound for Alderney.
Arrive in the early hours of Saturday morning after experiencing a night sail. The plan then is to moor up in the Harbour enjoy a cooked breakfast then explore this pretty island on foot or hire a bike.
At the end of the day we meet up for some excellent food (and a few drinks) in one of the many pubs and restaurants. On Sunday we shall return to the Hamble in daylight hours. This is another opportunity to gain a qualifying passage and test your navigation skills as we head for the Western Solent.
The price per berth is £195 to include on-board food. Food ashore is excluded from the price.

3rd January 2008 The RYA have announced a cross channel regatta week 15th to 22nd June 2008.
This is an ideal opportunity to cruise across Channel in the company of other yachts and possibly gain
a first solo channel crossing experience. The itinery takes in Cherbourg, Guernsey and Alderney. The
skipper would ideally hold a RYA Yachtmaster practical certificate. See Pricelist for more information.

25th March 2007 Cross Channel mile building trips now on offer June/July 2007.

December 2007 Range of sailing books now available from Hurst Point. Tuition and Bunk Side reading.

24th March 2007 Season now well underway in good winds but still low temperatures due to northerly winds at the moment. Sea temperature 10deg C!

2nd February 2007 Elan 434 (2 off) added to the yachts available for Solent yacht charter

TESTIMONIALS

Below is a very small selection of customers feed back:

30th Birthday Surprise May 2012 'Hi Clive, I just wanted to say thank you very much for Sunday’s yacht trip. Andrew loved it and it was a great way to celebrate his 30th birthday. We will certainly be recommending you to anyone thinking of doing something similar for a special celebration. We were so lucky to have such brilliant weather as well. Thanks again!' Jenna

Friends Reunion May 2012 'Clive, Thank you for your email, which I'll forward onto Alex, as you say, there may be a family connection there. We had a most enjoyable day sailing with you. You made us novices feel at home on the yacht, and did a great job to explain some of the mysteries around sailing. We also enjoyed a few beers in Lymington afterwards. I don't know whether or not we'll be in a position to influence any choice relating to a team building event from work, but if the opportunity presents itself, I'll certainly bear you in mind. Thanks again for a thoroughly enjoyable day, and I hope to be able to repeat the experience in future. Regards Graham'

Yesterday was very pleasant - it was good fun beating back down to Lymington in the squalls, though it does sound like we made the right decision to give Saturday a miss! 'Thanks for the pictures and a great day yesterday. Everyone who participated had a great day and for many it was their first experience at sea. All the feedback is that this event should be a regular occurrence and there is talk about entering the Bovis Cup on Dotty. In fact Dotty now has cult status ........ The whole day was just about perfect, the weather conditions, the food and the skippers all came together and delivered above expectation of the bosses, so thanks for that. Darren'

'Hi Clive, That is a great result! (3rd out of 21 Bavaria 38s entered) I will not take any credit, however as you and the boys deserve every bit of it. I enjoyed the race weekend so much that I am now planning to do my competent crew course. Once I have got that under my belt, I know there are a number of clients of my firm (solicitors) who are keen sailors so I will endeavour to get some events booked in next year. Kind regards, Dianne'

Thanks again for a great hen weekend back in June. (sent August) We had a great time, and I don't think any of the girls will forget sailing home in a gale in a hurry ! Now that we are back from wedding and honeymoon and life has returned to normal I am keen to get back out on the water. Do you have any charter boats that might be suitable for either weekend ? Angela C

SHORT SAILING HOLIDAY TRIPS

UK SAILING HOLIDAYS IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND

Sailing holidays in the Solent are extremely good value for money as there are no flights to fund or currency exchange charges. You get an extra two days sailing holiday rather than travel stress. The weather was very warm in 2011 with lovely sunny conditions early in the year and well into October before the drying conditions ended. There was very little rain, a handful of showers, and the hose pipe ban was brought in early as proof. Summer temperatures outside of the heat waves were well up in the 20s in the summer months. Winds in the Solent are ideal for sailing which may be why it is the home of yachting. Speaking of Cowes, the annual regatta suffered from calm conditions early in the event. Generally winds ranged force 3 to 5, rather less than the previous year when force 6 was common, and it was not until early November that we had a serious gale.

The great thing about Solent sailing is the variety which you do not get from an exposed coastline. The presence of the Isle of Wight adds many convenient anchorages, bays, beaches, creeks, harbours and rivers within easy reach of the mainland marinas. For the more adventurous, a sail around the island via the famous Needles rocks provides the reward of breath taking marine scenery and you may see a whale or dolphin. The beautiful blue flag beaches at Studland are 3 hours sailing from fashionable Lymington. Poole harbour, the world's second largest natural harbour with Brownsea Island home of the boy scouts and red squirrels as its center piece is 4 hours away. Weymouth, the venue for the Olympic sailing in 2012 is 8 hours sailing and Cherbourg is 12 hours due south.

In addition to the scenery and the sailing, there can be few places steeped in such naval history as the Solent. Apart from the fleet assembled in Portsmouth harbour (3 hours sailing from Lymington) the Beaulieu river gives access to Bucklers Hard where three of Nelsons warships in action at the battle of Trafalgar were built. The worlds largest cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2 are frequently sighted rounding the sand bank off Calshot Spit as are the super tankers offloading at Fawley and the floating giants heading for Southamptons container port.

On the wining and dining side, apart from the al fresco possibilities using the cockpit table or main saloon dining table, most marinas have their own on site restaurants. A short stroll into the harbour area reveals a wealth of choice of waterside bars and bistros. We will advise you of the ones to head for.So why would anyone want to sail anywhere else?

Prices for holidays follow the pricing given in the Bareboat and Skippered sections.

LATEST SAFETY EQUIPMENT INSTALLED ON OUR BAVARIA 38

January 2011 AIS (Automatic Identification System) receiver installed on Bavaria 38 'Dotty Dot'. This allows the VHF antenna to pick up continuous transmissions from the VHF sets of other vessels encoded in which is heading and speed information together with the name of the vessel. This is then automatically displayed on our colour chart plotter (or a laptop) via our NMEA interface.

15th March 2005 Yachts are being continuously upgraded. The Bavaria 38 'Dotty Dot'is now equipped with colour Raymarine C Series Chartplotter and Radar. This equipment is simple to operate and will allow greater safety for Channel crossings. The Marpa technology allows the tracking of ships which may be on a reciprocal heading and early action to be taken. Also invaluable in Solent fog which can roll in during many months of the year.

June 2004 Hurst Point Yacht Charters in The Round The Island Race. We were pleased with our result in the Round The Island Race. Look at the pictures below. Although we did not have the best conditions with gusty winds and choppy seas we had an official time of 8 Hours 24 Minutes and a great time was had by all. See photos below.
